Film background

John Woo directed Hard Boiled in 1992, starring Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung. The film follows a relentless cop and an undercover agent navigating Hong Kong’s criminal underworld. Woo’s direction established Hard Boiled as his magnum opus, and the film’s stylized “gun-fu” action influenced the language of global action cinema.

4K UHD presentation

Shout! Studios presents Hard Boiled from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative. The film is shown in Dolby Vision HDR with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Viewers can choose Cantonese or English DTS-HD Master Audio Mono tracks, accompanied by newly translated English subtitles created for this edition.

The package also includes a Blu-ray edition of the film. The Blu-ray disc uses the same 4K restoration and offers all commentary tracks for HD playback.

Audio commentaries

This release features three commentary tracks across UHD and Blu-ray discs:

  • John Woo and journalist Drew Taylor provide a new director’s commentary.
  • Historian Frank Djeng contributes a new scholarly track.
  • An archival Criterion Collection commentary brings together Woo, producer Terence Chang, filmmaker Roger Avary, and critic Dave Kehr.

Special features (disc three)

The third Blu-ray disc collects bonus content created for this edition:

  • John Woo appears in a new interview titled “Violent Night.”
  • Actor Anthony Wong reflects on his role in “Boiling Over.”
  • Producer Terence Chang speaks in “No Time for Failure.”
  • Screenwriter Gordon Chan discusses the script in “Hard to Resist.”
  • Screenwriter Chung Hang Kuk is featured in “Boiled to Perfection.”
  • Composer Michael Gibbs covers the score in “Body Count Blues.”
  • Author Grady Hendrix contributes a segment called “Hong Kong Noir.”
  • Academic Lin Feng participates in “Gun-Fu Fever” and “Chewing the Fat.”
  • Deleted and extended scenes expand on the feature.
  • The set also includes trailers and an image gallery.

52-page booklet

The 4K UHD set includes a 52-page booklet containing four newly commissioned essays. The booklet also presents archival artwork and behind-the-scenes materials to give fans historical context and collectible value.

Packaging and production

Henry Weintraub served as 4K UHD and Blu-ray producer. Callie Chung designed the package. Cheol joo Lee created the cover illustration. Together, their work defines the physical presentation of this edition.
