Chusei Sone's Scars of the Sun and Blow the Night Get a Limited Blu-ray Double-Bill from Third Window Films

Third Window Films is releasing a Chusei Sone double-bill, Scars of the Sun (1981) and Blow the Night (1983), on Blu-ray in July. The 2-disc set is a limited edition of 2000 copies, gathering two hard-to-see Sone films into one release with newly produced commentaries and video essays.
Scars of the Sun and Blow the Night
Scars of the Sun (太陽のきずあと) is a Toei youth-drama starring Kenichi Kaneda, and it marks a departure from the Roman Porno work Sone was known for. Kaneda plays Shuhei, a member of a rough-and-tumble gang whose customs begin to fracture once he is reunited with his estranged brother. When the brother's girlfriend joins the group, her presence sparks friction between the members and the traditions they follow.
Blow the Night (夜をぶっとばせ) is a hard-hitting docu-drama and the first film from Sone's production company, Filmworkers. It draws on the story of Namie Takada, a 15-year-old thinner-sniffing girl-gang member. Takada stars in the film as herself, telling a brutal tale of wild youth in early-'80s Japan.
On the Discs
Disc one includes Scars of the Sun with a feature audio commentary by Jasper Sharp. Dakota Noot contributes a video essay titled "The Sun Sets on Chusei Sone," and the original trailer is also included.
For Blow the Night, disc two adds an interview with producer Kunihiko Ukai and a feature audio commentary by Tom Mes. James Balmont supplies a video essay, "Juvenile Deliquency in '80s Japan," alongside that film's original trailer.
The set comes in a 0-Ring with illustrated artwork from Ryan Quackenbush, over full-height Scanavo packaging with reversible sleeves drawing on artwork from both films. A 12-page booklet features writing from Miriam Balanescu.
Scars of the Sun and Blow the Night is Region B locked and releases July 27, 2026.
