88 Films January Blu-ray Releases Revealed: On the Run, Devil Times Five, and More
88 Films has announced its January lineup featuring On the Run (1988), Gardenia (1979), Devil Times Five (1974), The Delightful Forest (1972), and Secret Service of the Imperial Court (1984). The mix includes Hong Kong noir, Shaw Brothers action, Italian crime, and a drive-in horror favorite newly restored in 4K, with new commissioned artwork across several titles.
On the Run (1988)
Yuen Biao headlines a lean Hong Kong noir directed by Alfred Cheung. When a troubled cop is framed and his family is threatened, he turns to assassin Chui Pai for help, forcing an uneasy alliance to survive. The release features new cover artwork by Sean Longmore.
Gardenia (1979)
This Rome-set Eurocrime entry joins the Italian Collection. A local boss named Gardenia refuses to move into narcotics, which sparks a violent struggle with a rival who wants drugs on the menu.
Devil Times Five (1974)
The cult “killer kids” shocker joins the Slasher Classics Collection (#61), newly restored in 4K from the original 35mm negative. Stranded children and a mysterious nun seek “shelter” at a lakeside retreat where the adults soon face a grisly reckoning.
The Delightful Forest (1972)
From Chang Cheh and Pao Hsueh-li, this Shaw Brothers standout tracks Wu Sung through exile, betrayal, and explosive revenge, featuring new artwork by Aurelio Lorenzo. Expect muscular choreography and broad-sword justice.
Secret Service of the Imperial Court (1984)
Also known as Police Pool of Blood, this Shaw Brothers wuxia pits a principled Brocade Guard against a corrupt eunuch who twists imperial power to deadly ends, featuring new artwork by “Kung Fu Bob” O’Brien.
These January titles follow recent 88 Films releases including No Orchids for Miss Blandish and The Town That Dreaded Sundown, both now on Blu-ray, as well as the label’s December 4K and Blu-ray releases and its October lineup featuring Peacock King and SS Experiment Love Camp.
