Takashi Miike’s Gozu (2003) is coming to physical media from two labels this year. New Wave Video and Radiance Films have announced 4K UHDs of the film with both using the same new 4K restoration of the only surviving 35mm Cannes print.
New Wave Video restored the Cannes print in 4K at its restoration facility in Sydney, Australia and the restoration premieres at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival, ahead of both releases.

The New Wave Video 4K UHD will be the label’s first Deluxe Rigid Box. “We love GOZU, and we wanted to give it the premium edition it truly deserves,” the label wrote in its announcement. The release follows more than a year of rights negotiations, and New Wave Video Co-Founder Maiko is credited for making it possible, saying the release would not have happened without her dedication.
Gozu follows a yakuza underling ordered to kill his superior. The job becomes both simpler and more complicated when the boss is accidentally killed and his corpse disappears. Radiance Films describes the film as a “yakuza nightmare.”
Neither label has announced a release date, pre-order details, or revealed cover art, and bonus features have yet to be announced for either release. New Wave Video promises more details in the coming weeks.
