The History of Sound is a 2025 period romance drama film. Oliver Hermanus directed the film. Ben Shattuck wrote the screenplay, and the film is based on his short stories “The History of Sound” and “Origin Stories.”
The story follows Lionel and David, two music students who meet in 1917 and form a relationship shaped by the era’s social pressures and the impact of World War I. After the war, the pair travel to rural Maine to record and preserve folk songs.
The cast includes Paul Mescal, Josh O’Connor, and Chris Cooper.
