New Wave Video has announced the launch of Nami Films, a new side label dedicated to curated releases of Japanese and Asian cinema that emphasize humanist storytelling over transgressive genre material.

The name Nami, meaning “wave” in Japanese, was chosen for its simplicity and its close connection to the spirit of New Wave Video. While New Wave Video will continue to serve as the home for extreme and transgressive cinema including horror, genre, erotic, noir, and other controversial works, Nami Films has been established as a complementary imprint with a clearly defined editorial focus.

Nami Films will specialize in carefully curated, deluxe editions of Japanese dramas, coming-of-age films, comedies, and long-overlooked titles. The label is positioned as a celebration of the quieter, warmer, and deeply human side of Asian cinema, with an emphasis on presenting these films with appropriate care and respect.

The new imprint will operate alongside New Wave Video rather than replacing or altering its existing release strategy, allowing both labels to coexist while serving different areas of Japenese and Asian cinema.

The company confirmed that Spine Number One will be announced soon. The inaugural release will mark the first official English-language release of a highly acclaimed Japanese drama from the 2000s. No further details were provided at this time.

Updates for Nami Films will be shared on their Instagram via @nami_films_au, while Facebook announcements will continue to be posted through the New Wave Video page.
