88 Films adding Sakuran (2006) to its Japanarchy Blu-ray line

88 Films is releasing Sakuran (2006) on Blu-ray in the UK and US this March as part of the label’s Japanarchy Collection, joining the other 88 Films March releases already covered on the site.
Film Overview
Sakuran (2006) transports viewers to the Edo-period Yoshiwara red-light district through the vibrant, stylized lens of director and photographer Mika Ninagawa, adapting the manga by Moyoco Anno. Anna Tsuchiya stars as Kiyoha, a young girl sold into a brothel and placed on the strict path of courtesan training. Her defiant temperament and striking beauty fuel tensions within the house, where deportment, elegance, and adherence to rigid expectations define survival.
As rivalries intensify and the pressures of hierarchy close in, the possibility of romance raises a central question: can emotional connection or desire offer a real path out of the world that has shaped her life? With its saturated color palette and meticulous art direction, the film builds a visually rich portrait of ambition, rebellion, and confinement.
