Oscilloscope Labs Summer Blu-ray Releases

Oscilloscope Labs is bringing two new titles to Blu-ray this summer.

Albert Birney's OBEX, a black-and-white lo-fi fantasy set in 1987, follows a reclusive man whose obsession with a mysterious computer game pulls him into a surreal analog nightmare. The Blu-ray includes an audio commentary, short films from Birney, a featurette on the making of the real OBEX game, and several Blu-ray exclusive extras including Josh Dibb's scoring sessions, promos, and behind-the-scenes footage. A theatrical trailer is also included.

Elizabeth Lo's documentary Mistress Dispeller examines China's emerging profession of hired intermediaries who work undercover to end extramarital affairs and preserve marriages. The film follows Wang Zhenxi as she navigates a real, unfolding love triangle. The Blu-ray includes an audio commentary, a Q&A with director Elizabeth Lo and executive producer Constance Wu, deleted scenes, and a theatrical trailer.

OBEX and Mistress Dispeller are available to pre-order from the Oscilloscope Labs website. You can read the full release details below.

OBEX

In pre-internet 1987, Conor and his dog Sandy live a life of seclusion, lost in the slow-rendering graphics of early Macs and televisions aglow with late night horror movie marathons. But when he begins playing OBEX, a new and mysterious, state-of-the-art computer game, he finds himself trapped in a low-tech, but high-stakes analog hellscape as the line between reality and game blurs.

Audacious and uncanny, writer-director Albert Birney's OBEX is a delightfully skewed lo-fi fantasy. Shot in striking black and white, this surreally nostalgic nightmare revisits the dawn of personal computing to reflect on the loneliness of our always-online present day.
