Mondo Macabro Announces Mystics in Bali and Queen of Black Magic 2-Disc Blu-ray Set
Mondo Macabro is releasing a double feature pairing two Indonesian horror classics from 1981. The Mystics in Bali and Queen of Black Magic 2-disc Blu-ray marks the worldwide HD debut for both films. This limited edition release launches in October as part of the label's annual Halloween sale. Mondo Macabro previously announced The Devil's Nightmare 4K Blu-ray will also go up for order during the sale.
Release details
The set goes on sale October 30th, 2025 at 9 AM Pacific/12 noon Eastern. Mondo Macabro is producing 1,500 numbered copies.
Mystics in Bali
Mystics in Bali follows an American woman vacationing in Bali who becomes fascinated by the Leyak, a local black magic cult. She seeks out a Leyak witch to learn the cult's secrets. The plan goes wrong.
Director H. Tjut Djalil's 1981 creature feature is known for its audacious plot and outrageous shock sequences that stand apart from western horror conventions.
Queen of Black Magic
Queen of Black Magic centers on a wedding ceremony in the Indonesian countryside that goes wrong. The groom suspects black magic and confronts the woman he believes is responsible. She is thrown over a cliff to her death.
A hermit rescues the woman from the jungle and tells her she must seek revenge. She learns to use black magic against those who accused her. Director Liliek Sudjio's 1981 film was one of the first Asian horror movies to receive wide video release in the United States. The film's special effects and gore sequences were unique at the time.
Technical specifications
The 2-disc Blu-ray is region-free. Both films include English or Indonesian audio options with optional English subtitles. The set includes an extended 2-hour version of Mystics in Bali in Indonesian with optional English subtitles.
Special features
Filmmaker Joko Anwar provides introductions to both features. Jake Gallo contributes a video essay titled "Monsters Movies & Myth." The set includes the original trailer for Mystics in Bali.
Limited edition packaging
The set includes an exclusive slipcover and reversible inner sleeve with new artwork by Jolyon Yates. A booklet with original writing on the films is included.
