Cinema Expanded: The Films of Frederick Wiseman Blu-ray Box Set from BFI Releasing January 2026

BFI will release Cinema Expanded: The Films of Frederick Wiseman Blu-ray Box Set in the UK this January. The three-disc collection brings together five of Wiseman’s early documentaries from 1967 to 1975, restored in 4K by Zipporah Films and presented in high definition. The release includes a video essay, a filmed discussion, and a perfect-bound book with newly commissioned essays and archival writings.

- High School (1968, 75 minutes)
- Hospital (1970, 84 minutes)
- Juvenile Court (1973, 144 minutes)
- Welfare (1975, 167 minutes)
Special features and book
The extras include a video essay by Ian Mantganion and Frederick Wiseman: A Discussion (2025), a conversation between filmmaker Andrea Luka Zimmerman and curator Matthew Barrington recorded at BFI Southbank.
The accompanying perfect-bound book features essays by David Jenkins, Eric Marsh, Stephen Mamber, Philip Concannon, and Shawn Glinis and Arlin Golden (Wiseman Podcast), plus a 1986 interview with William Brayne and a 1974 Sight & Sound essay by Thomas Atkins.
